My husband and I got married at the ripe ages of 20 and 21 and bought our first house the next year. Certainly not the norm in our generation, but we were young and in love with aspirations. We are still living in the same house that we bought 5 years ago and have had an adventurous time transforming it.

Our house was built in 1905 and was previously not well taken care of. It was dirty and stuck in the 70's. I'm talking blue and green neon carpet in the downstairs bedroom, and orange and brown carpet in the mud room and on the basement stairs. Yikes!

As you can imagine, we've had a lot of projects to do. That's what we wanted at the time - it was FUN. We have enjoyed trying to make this house our own even though we have had to scrub, and scrub and scrub, and work very hard to do it.

One day, I got so tired of looking at my stairs that I did something crazy.
I had a newborn and was working from home, so stripping the paint off the stairs and repainting them was madness. It wasn't an option. Carpeting wasn't in our budget at the time, since if we were going to carpet the stairs, we were going to carpet most of the upstairs.. and part of me didn't have the heart to cover up the original wood floors.

As you know, I make vinyl decals for a living, and have a lot of vinyl material. I received a free roll of glossy white vinyl and thought to myself... hey! This might look nice over our nasty stairs!

So I scrubbed the stairs clean and peeled any excess paint off the stairs to make a smooth surface, and took one of my daughter's nap times to go to town. I cut sheets to fit the stairs and used the glossy white on the inside, and matte brown for the top of the steps.
And... Voila! Nice sparkly stairs. Ahhh. Much better.
